as quartered in a meat locker underneath a slaughterhouse. On February 13, 1945 a combined force of British and American bombers bombed Dresden. (Lustbager) The bombing was the basis of Kurt's most famous novel, Slaughterhouse-Five.
             During the bombing, the entire city was destroyed and 135,000 lives were lost. After the bombing the Germans made Kurt work as a corpse miner, a person who dug out the dead bodies of the German civilians who had lost their lives in the bombing. In April of 1945, Allied forces occupied what was left of a destroyed Dresden. On May 22 Kurt was returned to the United States and was awarded a purple heart for his war duties (Marek).
             On September 1, 1945, shortly after Kurt was discharged from the Army, he married Jane Cox, his high school sweetheart, and friend since Kindergarten.
