The Panzerfaust was an anti-tank weapon that developed in 1944 which was highly effective when used correctly. It was the German predecessor to the bazooka. The Panzerfaust was designed to be used and thrown away, but when production shortages, the firing tubs were often recycled. The Panzerfaust 30, the first type, were not very powerful, so they would often only cause superficial damage to the heavier tanks such as the T-34. They were also very risky to use since the range was limited to 30m (98ft). Once it had proved itself in actual battle, a new version was created, the Panzerfaust 60, which doubled the range and increased power of the explosives. This would become the most widely used Panzerfaust, initially with only 400,000 being produced a month. By December, 1944, this figure rose to 1.3 million a month. Two more versions would be produced, the 100 and 150. The 250 was developed but the war ended before any were created.
When an American M9A1 bazooka was captured in 1943, the Germans began developing the Panzerschreck, a German bazooka that was more powerful and effective than the Panzerfaust. Along with effectiveness however came increased danger. From the rear of the Panzerschreck would project a 5m flame, severely burning anything behind it. Another downside to the Panzerschreck was its limited range and accuracy. For these reasons, it was never produced anywhere near the numbers of the Panzerfaust.
