The Mockingbird Treatment

             The mockingbird's true identity is unheard of. It is never itself, as it is always emulating another creature. However, the fact that the mockingbird's ways differ from other birds is no reason to kill it. In truth, is it not innocent, as it never actually causes harm to anyone? It is not right to destroy innocence simply because we cannot comprehend it's magnificence. Harper Lee saw a mockingbird as a person who has fallen victim to vicious rumours. In Lee's novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, several innocent people, or mockingbirds, are targeted because of differences of opinion, social class, and even skin colour. Although it is not immediately evident, there are numerous mockingbirds that are targeted, including Boo Radley, Atticus Finch, and Mayella Ewell.
             Boo Radley's innocence is unquestionable. The fact that his was dubbed "Boo" by the town, erasing his actual name, Arthur, is a mere sign of how society unjustly prejudged him. He is truly the embodiment of blamelessness, as he never harmed anyone, despite the sea of rumours he was engulfed in. The rumours concerning his past were formulated by gossips: "According to Miss Stephanie Crawford, Boo was sitting in the livingroom cutting some items from the Maycomb Tribune... As Mr. Radley passed by, Boo drove the scissors into his parent's leg, pulled them out, wiped them on his pants, and resumed his activities" (11). There is no proof supporting any of the repugnant crimes Boo supposedly committed. Despite the lack of proof, Boo was still described as a monster. Apparently, "he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch" (13). After hearing the rumours, most of Maycomb naturally assumed they were true and from a legitimate source, when in fact that was not the case.
