             Usually, SS officers completed "selection" with the overseer of Dr. Josef Mengele. Majority of women, children, senior citizens and those that looked unfit or unhealthy were directed to the left; while most young men and others fit, were directed towards the right. A third direction for arriving prisoners was to accompany Dr. Mengele. These prisoners were usually twins, dwarfs, or people with a deformity. Though these people did not know this at the time, the left line meant immediate death at the gas chambers, the right line meant probable death from hard labor, and the walk with Dr. Mengele meant deathly medical experiments. (Rosenberg, p.2) These selections split families apart and some people switched lines to be with loved ones not knowing the outcome of such a radical decision. The belongings left in the cars were stored in warehouses, to be shipped later to Germany for the benefit of the Third Reich's coffers. (Gutman, p. 109) After the selection process was complete, the people in the right line would be transported to the "quarantine". Here they would be taken to the camp's bath, the "sauna". There their clothes and every last personal belonging were taken from them. They were ordered to strip down to the nude and to proceed to the barbers. The barbers would shave all the hair present on the body and then send you off to the showers. Calcium Chloride would be placed on your head as well. From there you are sent to the cloakroom where you are given a set of clothes. These clothes were fumigated clothes of past prisoners not in the best of shape.
