We need a government because it maintains order, protects its people and persecutes the criminals. Without a government anarchy would reign where people would basically do anything they want. Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, is a story about a group of boys stranded on a deserted tropical island. To maintain some kind of order, the boys all agree to set up a government consisting of rules and regulations. They use the conch to represent a democratic government but towards the end the conch fails and a dictatorship rules all.
             The boys consider it a necessity to try and recreate a basic civilization from which they came from. They still have the concept of law and order instilled in all of them. Ralph who is the elected leader designates boys to build huts and other boys to go out and hunt for food. They also begin to develop their own type of language. They start calling the smaller children "littuns" and the twins Sam and Eric "Samneric".
             The boys start to build their government on the principles of democracy. They use the conch to represent law, order and the power to summon democratic meetings. The conch represents law and order because only the person that holds it speaks and everyone else listens silently. Once it is blown into and produces that sound the boys know they have to gather for a meeting. When the boys values start to fade away, their lack of a system of power soon takes them away from civilization and leads them into a world of savagery and anarchy.
             When savagery starts to take over the boys, all form of democracy is gone. "The original democracy led by Ralph devolves into a cult-like despotism, with jack as a tyrant and the beast as both an enemy and a god". Jack rules with complete power; Roger is his second in command. Boys who disobey are punished and tortured. A boy named Wilfred is beaten for a small mistake. The boys are left with nothing
