Ideal Beauty

             For centuries women have been judged by their looks more than any other aspect of their person. Regardless of their personality or level of intelligence, a man's initial impression of a woman is based on their opinion of the woman's appearance. An attractive, young, slim white female is more likely to receive special treatment from men of all ages than someone who does not fit this description. The media promotes the idea that women must look a certain way to be found attractive.
             Almost every popular movie star or model is thin; some are even "waif-like." With this idea of how everyone is "supposed" to look implanted in our heads as young girls we struggle the rest of our lives to successfully become beautiful in society's view. Often in our society women desire a slim figure to such an extent that they become anorexic or bulimic as a result. Either disease can be fatal if not recognized soon enough. Others have attempted surgeries such as liposuction or having their stomachs stapled, which can also have serious physical side effects, just to become what society designates as attractive.
             There are many other ways women try to fit into the mold society has designed for beauty. The cosmetics industry thrives on a woman's desire to be beautiful. Every year companies create an increasing amount of products designed to enhance women's looks. The advertisements for these products lead women to believe that if they use these items they will become more desirable, thus conforming to society's idea of beauty.
             Cosmetic surgery is another option that has recently opened up to a larger majority of women. In the past only the wealthiest of women could afford such modifications of their physical appearance.
