Death Shall Set You Free

             Ever wondered why death sometimes brings us happiness. To some it may cause pain, to other tears of joy, but through it all people always go through one, joy or sorrow. Through "The Story of an Hour" we see how death brings joy to the life of a woman who has been unhappy all her life by her husbands side, yet isn't aware of this unhappiness until the news of his death. In this story Kate Chopin has grasped the theme of "freedom through death" and begins to plot the story, which leads into the actual theme of what she is about to write. Setting also plays a role in the development of the story, which coincides with symbolism of the setting to the story. The tone Chopin writes this story in also plays a role in the development of the theme. This leads us to the difference in perspectives between the characters in the story and the reader. Through this Chopin will be able to write about why freedom is achieved by many through the death of someone or their own death.
             As freedom through death inspires the plot of the story, it is the plot of the story which creates to the actually theme. Ms. Mallard hears of the death of her husband from her sister and her husband's friend. At first, her reaction was to grief like anyone would, but shortly after "when the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone." It is clear that Chopin has started the story by stating the actual occurrence of what has happened to link it in with the theme of what the reader will grasp after reading her story. She continues on to describe the emotions Ms. Mallard experiences up in her room as she sits alone by the window. Leaving it up to the reader to set the theme in his or her own perspective of the point she is trying to set. Ms. Mallard finds herself uttering the words, "free, free, free" as she lets this feeling take over her.
