rive: James Dean was known for his 1956 Porsche 550 Spyder in which he died (Bayley 55); David Hasselhoff is known for his black Trans Am that he drove in the popular 80's TV show Knight Rider. Constant exposure to something, as in the case of the automobile, creates a loyal following and obsessive interest.
             Many times cars define a person in the music profession such as with musicians driving SUV's, or situations like James Dean making the Porsche one of the most notorious and mass desired cars (Bayley 55). Pop musicians make use of the automobile as an icon from the Beach Boys and their little deuce coupes to Chuck Berry and his Ford V8. Music in our society recognizes the importance of the car in society as an identifier and as an icon. The use of the car in music shows that musicians, who are primary communicators to the public, recognize the social appeal of cars to the American public.
             The car has made its impacts elsewhere like on the economy; the car's development follows the Depression, war repercussions, supply and demand, and economic inflation or recession. It follows events such as our gas crisis in the 70's, which created a market for more fuel efficient European and Asian cars that more environmentally friendly engines than a Mustang or Camaro. The automobile also mimicked things in society through its design changes such as the tail wings on the Cadillacs in the 1960's and the Art Deco design of the 32' Ford coup during the Great Depression. The automobile has molded and mimicked history as well as shaped American society, as we know it.
             When Henry Ford came out with his Model T in 1904 he was re-inventing the car in a form that the middle class man could afford (Tshimanga). He made production more economically sound, had cost conscious materials, and made the car available to people through mass production rather than availability through custom orders for the rich and up...
