             Socialism, while it has similarities to communism, is closer to capitalist economic systems. Modern socialism arose as a reaction against capitalism because of the misery it seemed to be inflicting on the working class. In response to the suffering, socialism rejects the notion that the market is responsible for a fair society. Robert Owen, one of the first socialists, stated quite simply that, "Socialism... proposed that a society living together should share all the wealth produced." To have this proposal hold true, taxes in a socialist system must have a greater monetary value than those in capitalism – these socialist taxes have a greater impact on society.
