The Things They Carried

            "THE THINGS THEY CARRIED"
            
             In war, the last thing a soldier should be thinking about is their loved ones, family, relatives, friends, and especially any distractions such as a crush on a girl or guy. Feeling one's emotions and inner feelings should not be in the same place at the same time as when one is fighting on the battlefield in war. A soldier by the name of Jimmy Cross was one of the soldiers who let his emotions and inner feelings get in the way of his duty at war. Jimmy was thinking of and had his mind on this one girl named Martha. Martha was the main distraction on Jimmy's mind during the war. If Jimmy did not have his mind on Martha during this time of war, maybe he would not have been so distracted from his work, and could have saved his friend from dying. Jimmy carried two photos of Martha in his wallet, one of her against a brick wall and the other one of her playing volleyball. He also carried two other things, which were from her as well. He carried a pebble and her letter that she wrote. The pictures, the pebble, and the letters that she wrote, all meant something to Jimmy Cross, since he loved this girl Martha with all his heart.
            
             The two pictures that Jimmy Cross carried of Martha is the most symbolic thing that he has of her. It shows how distracted he was from his duties at war from those two photos of her. The pictures of Martha remind Jimmy of all the times he was with her and all he talked about with her. The photo of Martha against the brick wall reminded him that she had boyfriends, because he could see the shadow of the picture-taker spread out against the brick wall in the picture, and because he loved her so much. The second photograph was an action shot of Martha playing volleyball. When he saw her legs in the picture, he remembered when he went to the movies with her. He had remembered that moment when he touched her knee and when she game him a look that said, "...
