Crimes of Women

            Crimes of Women

For years studies of women's deviance were limited to

prostitution and other kinds of sexual deviance thought to be

typical female offences. It soon became apparent that not all

women offenders fit this stereotype and that women were involved

in a wide variety of criminal activities. In addition to

prostitution, drug offences and homicide are the most frequent

             offences involving women...

Down in history, Asian American, African Americans and Latin

American women met the high demand for prostitution.

This happened around the 1880's through the 1920's for the Black

and Asian because a lot were migrating to the slums from their

native homeland or for blacks deep down in the south.

The sexual demands of white men doubled in Chinatowns and tripled

in Black ghettos across the nation.

Again this is because of the poverty and crime rate because there

were little or no jobs in the area. Most of them were single with

children and had no means of support, but to sell their bodies

             for money.

In 1986, the last year for the Uniform Crime Reports included

Hispanic arrest. Blacks and Latinos were the only two races of

             color arrested for prostitution,(Young, 1986).

One possible explanation for this unbalanced number for

prostitution of minorities is that their sometimes forced to work

             the streets.

Many things such as abandonment, neglect, verbal attacks,

parental problems with alcohol and drugs, physical and sexual

             abuse,(Chesney-Lind 1997).

"Streetwalkers" not only increase the possibility of contact

with cops but also introduce police harassment and racial

             bias,(Garland,1981).

Streetwalkers are mainly poor living day to day.

On the other there are also call-girls. Call-girls are high class

             prostitutes who barely get caught.

Many are white who have college degrees and are from middle class

             backgrounds ...
