Pride and prejudice is a novel describing the people and times of the Victorian era. It was written by Jane Austen, who depicts a society in the eighteenth century of men/women, and families and how they are "supposed" to carry themselves. The historical work of Austin's novel is in a time when the social standings were considered most important in upholding the family reputation. Grace, manners, old money and social standings were what you were going to be associated as. They were the biggest concerns of the eighteenth century.

You were disgusted with the women who were always speaking and looking and thinking for your approbation alone. I roused, and interested you, because I was so unlike them. There I have saved you the trouble of accounting for it; and really all things considered, I begin to think it perfectly reasonable. Looking at Elizabeth, who was the one speaking to Darcy, it is apparent that she is an outspoken woman who expresses herself on whatever issues may concern her. During the Victorian era a woman's strong personality was very appalling to society. She is what would be considered as NOT the social norm.
