Summary of 'The United States'

This is a description of The United States from a sixty-eight year old person, who traveled to The United States their first time in quest of 'friends'. The author opened up the description with a statement saying that The United States "can be very hot there or very cold." This struck me, because I knew they were talking about the weather, but they were also speaking metaphorically. This was apparent when the author mentioned skyscrapers, cowboys and then mentioned gangsters, women clubs, and political parties. The author makes many comparisons, of The United State's scenery, to other places of the world that they had seen. "...in the Arizona Desert I was to feel I was almost but not quite in India, and in the Yosemite Valley that it was not quite Switzerland." I'm glad the author was able to pick out the fact that there really are good people in The United States. I have many friends outside of this country, and there's a well known misconception and misunderstanding of US citizens. The author writes, "I remember the chambermaid in the hotel at Salt Lake City who when I offered her a tip replied, 'I don't like to take your money, brother, you need it more than I do.'" The author goes on to say, "That is the sort of remark which comes from the heart and goes to the heart..." It's that kind of statement that helps me realize not everyone outside The United States, will stereotype. I enjoyed reading this story. It makes me happy to know that, foreigners still see the true beauty of The United States.
