Hope

             Lisel Mueller wrote the poem " Hope." Mueller uses common things in order to explain to the reader how hope affects our everyday lives. In stanza two hope sprouts. In this stanza the poet uses references to eyes that cannot actually see. Hope cannot be seen except in the eyes of those who have hope. Potatoes cannot see, yet the eyes of the potato are what allow the potato to reproduce. They are the seeds. The second example in this stanza is the earthworm. Earthworms cannot see either. They are in darkness and whenever the earthworm is cut into two or more pieces, those pieces will continue to move even after they are severed. The third example here is the eyes and tail of the dog. The lines, " it is the motion that runs/from the eyes to the tail of a dog, " indicate that the entire animal is affected or filled with hope (lines 13 &14). Hope can be seen not only in the eyes of the dog, but also in the movement of the tail as the dog anticipates a reward or food. In the final example in the stanza Mueller writes," it is the mouth that inflates the lungs/of the child that has just been born "(lines 15 & 16). In these lines she describes the first breaths of the newborn child. The cries of the newborn indicate that the child will survive. If the child does not cry within a few minutes period after birth, the doctor, as well as the parents, does not hold much hope of survival for it.
             In the lines " It is a singular gift/We cannot destroy in ourselves "(lines 17 &18). In the following lines she states that hope is a gift from God to each of us. It is something that we cannot destroy and it is something that some of us might use in our religious faith. The lines in this stanza indicate the purpose of hope.
