India-Conflict: The Clash Over Kashmir

             "Rumors of War, Hints of Peace" written on February 4, 2002 seems not only timely, but also greatly insightful. The author, Fareed Zakira, points out a couple of key factors about the volatile situation in South Asia. Zakaria quickly reveals a prediction that while explosive the situation will probably not elevate beyond a cold war. Claiming, "Despite all the contradictory signs, most likely there will be neither real war nor real peace between India and Pakistan."
             The author shrewdly recognizes the veracity that it truly is in no sides best interest to begin a military conquest. The author also provides valuable insight as to India's recent substantial military mobilization. The author deems this to be a signal to the United States. A directive which is meant to pressure the United States to keep the Pakistani militants in line-the United States reward-their search for Bin Laden is unscathed by a India-Pakistan war. In fact both Secretary of State Colin Powell representing the United States interests as well as Prime Minister Tony Blair representing Great Britain have both begun asserting great pressure on Pakistani President Musharraf.
             Through out it's short history, Pakistan, has been ensnared with a series of poor leaders whom did little to modernize or broker peace. Musharraf however is viewed differently, and this may be a turning point in the way the government treat the militant reactionary groups, however one thing is crystal clear. Musharraf, as well as a solid group of middle class Pakistani's who are staunch supporters of him, will not support a retreat from Kashmir.
