As all of us know, METU gives more opportunities to students than the other universities in Turkey, so we can say METU is better than the others. However, being better does not mean everything is good there. We know that if there is people somewhere, there always exist problems and you cannot easily create a system, which is perfect and makes everyone happy. At this point we will emphasize the problems about exam schedule and try to give solutions and suggestions for these problems.
How students may be affected psychologically by the narrowly arranged exam schedule will be mentioned in this paragraph. In our opinion, exam schedule is not logically arranged. In current arrangement, students can concentrate on neither their exams nor their courses. The dates of exams are close to each other, so that; students cannot have the chance to study for their exams enough. And this lack of time for studying causes stress on students. At this point it will be good to define stress. Stress is the automatically response that our bodies give to internal or external impacts. Moving to another city, loss of beloved person, various physical or psychological disorders are the examples of these impacts. Having stress in long period time may cause disruptions in emotional, spiritual, physical and social health. To illustrate, migraine – a headache sickness- is caused by stress. Since the main problem of the students that is caused by academic life, is stress, they commonly have health problems caused by it. And according to our questionnaire, majority of the students think that, they are affected negatively by the arrangement of exam schedule. For example, % 87 of students does not want to take exams after 17:30 and % 78 of the dislike having exam at weekends. Another aspect in exam schedule is the number of exams for one course.
