At the beginning of the story Huck lives a troubled and disorganized life style under the rule of his abusive father. Changes in Huck's personality begin to appear when he moves into the home of the Widow Douglas and Miss Watson where he is demanded to drop his primitive habits and leave behind his independence to reform to routine. Huck is unable to make the transition and leaves with Jim. Huck's choice to leave is the first of unsure decisions.
             At the start of the journey Huck continues to display his ignorance and inexperience. He becomes very indecisive about what he feels for his new companion Jim. At first Huck constantly finds himself contemplating his choices around Jim and often wonders what Miss Watson and other proper elders would think of his actions. While Huck knows the legal difference between right and wrong he is unable to separate the contrast between right and legal. Through getting to know Jim better and learning about his human feelings Huck decides to make an acceptation for the slave and becomes determined to protect him. Huck discovers that Jim is a real person and allows himself to break the laws of God and society for Jim's sake.
             Towards the end of the book Huck builds his bohemian ways stronger, becoming very independent and basing his acts solely on his own opinion. The more Huck gets to know Jim the more he wants him to succeed. By the end of the story Huck is much more mature and well traveled. Although he still shows minor and excusable ignorance in the areas of common sense and education, Huck develops as a person and learns to trust himself and ignore society with out any guilt.
