An example of the alchemist's teachings is, "Before a dream is realized, the soul of the world tests everything that was learned along the way. It does this not because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lessons we've learned as we've moved toward that dream" (Coelho, P133).
             Santiago learns from the alchemist important lessons about life along his journey. In the desert, the pair was approached by three armed tribesmen who demanded to know what they were doing there, and what they were carrying in their bags. When the tribesmen searched the alchemist's bags and discovered the philosopher's stone and the elixir of life, he (much to the surprise of Santiago) blatantly told them the secret of alchemy. It was then that he taught Santiago one of life's simpler lessons. "When you possess great treasures within you, and try to tell others of them, seldom are you believed" (Coelho, P135).
