             It should be noted that later pictures of Clare would depict her holding a lily representing chastity, or a book symbolizing her Rule of Life, or the monstrance which recalls Clare's protection against the invading Saracens. This panel uniquely shows Clare holding the Cross, the core of her spirituality. It is directly over Clare's heart. Nothing is more intimate to her.
             The Cross is an intricate depiction drawn in the style of Byzantine-syriac iconography. It is very elaborate with sharp points radiating out, a Syrian symbol of salvation to all corners of the world. The rounded knobs are typical Syrian details. Just above the Cross and Clare's left shoulder are soft traces of an olive branch. Perhaps the unknown artist wanted to remind us that the Cross is a symbol of peace; peace won by Christ on the Cross for humanity, and peace which we should share with one another. It evokes Francis' greeting "Pace e bene!" ("Peace and Goodness!")
