Lord of the Flies : Leadership

             Through out time, leaders have possessed many different qualities and characteristics that made them effective and efficient leaders. Many of these qualities are represented in characters, in the book, "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding. The protagonist, Ralph, starts off as the leader of a tribe of boys, but then, another boy, Jack, overtakes Ralph and the tribe, becoming the leader. Different decisions and actions lead to the development of leadership qualities of both Ralph and Jack. Jack, usually takes quick, immediate action, not thinking about consequences, if anybody actually thought about following Jack, and what he stands for, he would have no followers, but, he is a great leader, and is able to whip people into such a frenzy, that they cannot think about their actions, and just follow the crowd. Ralph, on the other hand, has a more calm, thought-out way of leading and decision making. His actions usually benefit his people as a whole, and help everybody in one way or another, as opposed to Jacks, who just does things on a whim, who just does things to have fun.
             Ralph posses many qualities that add to, and decrease his effectiveness as a leader. Just about every decision Ralph makes, will either help the boys escape from their island, or improve the way they live somehow. One instance, where Ralph helped them escape, was when Ralph thought of making a fire, so as to let passers-by see the smoke and rescue them. "We can help them to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire," said Ralph. A second idea Ralph has is to make huts to live in. Most of the boys agree with this idea, but don't like that they have to help make them... they would rather hunt with Jack. "When the meeting is over, they'd work for 5 minutes, then wander off or go hunting." Ideas like this, though helpful ...
