Communication apprehension has many forms but is most severe and common in public speaking. According to J. McCroskey, "Home environmental factors such as the amount of family talk and parent-child interaction styles predict children's communication behavior." There are many theories of the causes of communication apprehension. Being in a new or different situation, this type is generated because you are put in a situation that you are not familiar with. You see yourself as having subordinate status, when you think that others are better than you anxiety is increased. You feel conspicuous, like when you are the center of attention, this causes anxiety to increase because all eyes are on you. Lack of similarity with the audience, this can increase anxiety because you feel that the audience does not identify with you or you have little in common with them. Your prior history of apprehension, if you have suffered from communication apprehension before then you may fear that it will happen again, causing anxiety to increase.
The consequences of high communication apprehension are great. People with high communication apprehension avoid communication wherever possible. This effects the job they choose, where they may sit in a classroom setting, even how much they speak. They may feel discomfort, like rapid heart beat, sweaty palms and dry mouth. They also may have lower self-esteem, unable hold management positions, not very self-confident and there success in life can be lowered.
