Revenge is one of the basic tools of human instinct. In the Encarta Encyclopedia, revenge is defined as "harming someone in repayment for harm they have caused another, a loved one, or a group you are dedicated to." (1) The theme of revenge in Medea is like the saying, "what goes around comes around" in the sense that Medea has a strong desire to get back at Jason for what he has done to her. Instead of accepting Jason's betrayal and her humiliation, Medea ends her marriage and takes her revenge. This paper will examine Medea's idea of revenge, her reasons for it and her plan to fulfill it.
             Medea uses the best source of revenge ever. She uses Jason's own children against him. For her own pride, not to look like a fool in front of anybody, Medea kills King Creon's daughter Glauce, who is to be married to Jason, and her two children. She kills Glauce by sending her children with poisoned clothing for the princess, which also lead to the murdering of her children. She tells Jason "They died from a disease they caught from their father" (2).
             Medea also feels strongly about revenge, because she gave up her whole life to be with Jason, and this is the thanks she gets. She murdered her brother and betrayed her family by leaving her home for a foreign land, Greece. Even still, while Jason, knew all the sacrifices that Medea made for him, he still felt no obligation to stay with her, and left her for the princess.
             "Medea is a well - known woman of mythology. She was a sorceress, and she was also ruthless. To get what she wanted, whether love or revenge, she would do anything."(3) This quote clearly states that the use of revenge is quite normal for her type. Medea is very persistent and shows that she would do anything in her power to get this revenge on her husband, even if that means sacrificing her own children for it.
