to accept the division, rather than continuing the fight for a united Ireland. In 1967 the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association was formed to demand liberal reforms, including the removal of discrimination. From then on the situation blew up. In 1969 the British government sent troops to enforce order, but to no avail. In 1971 the Northern Ireland made a last desperate attempt at regaining control by implementing internment (imprisonment without trial), but was unable to handle the situation. The Westminster parliament invoked its powers under the Government of Ireland Act and suspended the Northern Ireland government, replacing it with direct rule from Westminster. This situation remained into the 1990s.
