Lord of the Flies, a novel written by William Golding, is set shortly after World War II. The novel is about a group of young boys trying to survive while stranded on a deserted island in the South Pacific. Ralph, Jack, and Piggy lead the young boys; they each represent different aspects of human nature in their society. Ralph is the shy boy whose confidence is raised by his popularity among his peers. Jack is an arrogant boy who always pushes to be best. His savage nature is contagious and the boys become bloodthirsty. Piggy is the intellectual oddball who is more reserved while everyone else is losing their minds. Changes experienced by Jack, Ralph, and Piggy cause the society to change by forcing the boys to mimic the different variations of their leaders human nature.
             Jack Merridew is an arrogant and self-righteous young man. The freedom on the island causes Jack to develop his darker side. Jack was severely lacking sensitivity when they were first lost on the island, "Shut up fatty"(p. 21). The boys voting to have Ralph as their leader instead of Jack further fueled his lack of sensitivity. The laws of their old civilized society in Britain had always bound Jack. His newfound freedom mixed with his malicious and arrogant nature causes him to become a savage. Jack led his choir with much discipline causing the boys to be very obedient. Jack's strong personality and self-assured leadership skills cause the boys to give into his savage ways. The boys, recognizing Jack's ability to become a leader, demote Ralph and Jack now takes on the role of leader.
             Ralph's good looks and his acceptance by his peers give him a great load of confidence to take on his role as leader. "There was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out; there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch"(p. 22).
