Times have changed a lot from the old days when parents now over 40 were growing up. In those days of 20 or 25 years ago, most Korean fathers were their children if they disobeyed and gave their children very little freedom. Even when their children grew up, they continued to make all important decisions for them, such as which college to attend, which subject to major in, and which girl they should marry.
             Now those children are becoming parents themselves, and they are turning out to be very lenient, giving their children much more freedom than they were given. Maybe today's young parents are just rebelling against their own upbringing and deciding that they don't want to be put their children through what they themselves had to go through.
             What I read an editorial say that this new-style upbringing is tuning kids into spoiled brats. And Korean newspapers also often carry this kind of columns complaining about the unruly behavior of many of today's kids running wild in public places. It tells the result comes from having too much freedom and too little control. Therefore, today's kids need strict method to teach such as spanking.
             However the old methods of strict child-rearing seem out of place in modern Korean society.
             For one thing, Korea is a different place from what it was 30 years ago. No longer a poor country where having to sacrifice is a way of life, Korea in the 2000's is a wealthy environment for kids to grow up in. Today's kids have computers, video games, and plenty of food on the table. And since most families now have cars, kids don't have to walk or even take buses to a lot of places. Amusement parks, fast food restaurants, and many other fun places didn't exist when their parents were growing up. To say that Korean kids today have it easier than their parents did would be a gross understatement.
