In the story "The Fall Guy", we are introduced to four young men, Billy, Stanley, Goolam and Muragase. Right from the start it is evident that Billy is an upright young man, different form the others.
             Billy was a casual drinker, only having "a shot or two on very special occasions"(133). He was also chairperson of the Mayville Physical Culture Club. While at the Isipingo Temple Festival, Billy, even though not religious, felt that turning a religious occasion into a funfair was "lopsided" this along with his other mentioned attributes, portray him as a sincere and dedicated man with sense of civic responsibility. Not only this, Billy was a born leader and although usually self-effacing, could take control of a situation if the occasion demanded. This was seen in the incident with the girl, where Billy managed to convince the girl to have sex with him, and the fact that he persuaded Sergeant Le Roux to drop the charges of rape against them.
             Above Billy's take charge attitude, his sincerity began to reveal itself once again. He was a man with a good set of principles, which were kept in check by his conscience.
             He was also his uncle Freddy's favourite nephew, which spoke favourably of him. He didn't disabuse his uncle's good judgement of him, as he alone paid back the loan with generous interest, and became the Fall Guy for that occasion.
             Stanley embodied the image of every man in Cato Manor in the 1950's. Extremely self conscious about his appearance and togged out as their favourite film star. Tony Curtis, in Stanley's case,
             The fact that his family could afford BrylCreem, and he was of a lighter complexion, made him stand out among his pals, and also equipped him to be vain enough to believe that he was good-looking. Stanley also a dutiful man, as it was he along with Muragase who had founded the Mayville Physical Culture Club.
