Human Relations

Well, I have purchased Human Relations Strategies for Success by Lowell Lamberton and Leslie Minor-Evans, Second edition.
The chapter that caught my eye was Chapter 18 – Maintaining Workplace Health (starts on page 584) and it deals with substance abuse, marital, family and personal problems of the employee, and also gives you warning signs, when and how to intervene and also offers information about EAP's, or Employee Assistance Programs.
I liked this chapter because it allows a manager to be more aware of the possible reasons (warning signs) behind a sudden lack of enthusiasm, a change in personal appearance and attitude, and also address excessive absenteeism and tardiness in an employee. All which are detrimental to a competent workplace and it's finances.
The chapter also discusses possible solutions such as EAP's which are free to employees and offer counseling, and rehab-therapy referrals in an attempt to resolve a personal issue of said employee.
I think this chapter is especially helpful because it not only helps to eliminate the costly result of absenteeism and tardiness – not to mention theft in some cases, but gives managers an idea as to how to help employees get their lives back in order should they assistance. It also allows a manager to 'work with' the employee -- if feasible and not dangerous-during any counseling or assistance, rather than immediately requesting the termination of the employee.
The issues discussed in this chapter are of a "touchy nature", but, with the helpful suggestions, a manager is armed with the knowledge to help a discouraged, hurting employee and this allows for a friendlier and more prosperous workplace.
