Our New Literacy

Literacy, a very essential skill, has been in constant change throughout the years. A long time ago being literate only signified the conquest of some very basic knowledge, such as knowing how to read a street sign or signing one's name to a paper during the time in which a person came in contact with the law. The privilege of literacy only belonged to a very small and elite group, while the rest of the people (illiterates) didn't know how to read and write even their own names. Nowadays, as society has developed in different fields and man's intellectual level has increased making him think more than in years past, there is a new kind of literacy. Knowledge is constantly evolving and as time passes it will be difficult for people to keep up with such a great amount of knowledge. It is no longer enough to know how to write one's name on a piece of paper. Today the language of mathematics and computers has evolved into a requirement for literacy and reading involves comprehension, interpretation and thinking about what authors are trying to say; it is not enough for the human mind to simply identify the scripts, it must comprehend what it reads. In addition, today's economical standard of life has increased and employers are looking for skilled people who know how to work with computers, write a memo or a report and speak clearly and intelligently. All in all, being literate in today's society is more than important, it is not something that one gets once and for all; it is always a process of growth.
