Hester and Her Search for Redemption

             Nathaniel Hawthorne is the author of the Scarlet Letter. This book is about a young puritan named Hester Prynne, who has committed adultery and is on her search for redemption. There are two other characters strongly involved in this book; they are Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale and Roger Chillingworth. Hester sinned adultery with Dimmesdale. Chillingworth is Hester's husband, who returns from Europe and finds his wife has sinned. Both characters in this love triangle, suffer physically and spiritually, along with Hester in her search for redemption of the scarlet letter.
             Hester sinned adultery and was sentenced to wearing the scarlet letter. She was a Puritan and did not forget that. She felt she needed to wear the scarlet letter until she was redeemed. The townspeople tried to shame her, and run her out of town. They wanted to embarrass her and make her feel guilty for her sin. Hester proved them wrong by doing the opposite of what they wanted her to do. Hester spiritually grew stronger and did not let people shame her. Hester gained very good qualities. She helped everyone who needed it. As Hester lived out her sin, she became very simple, and the sun didn't shine on her anymore. She never asked for redemption but showed people physically with her actions. The townspeople began to see these qualities in her and that she was trying to be a good Puritan. They begin to say that the "A" on her chest, no longer stood for adulteress, but for able. Once the scarlet letter was removed, and Hester was redeemed, the sun shined on her again, and she had her glow again.
             Chillingworth was Hester's husband who was settling affairs in Europe, but returned to America and saw Hester on the scaffold. He then disguised himself as the physician of the town. He became close friends with Dimmesdale. Before Chillingworth found out about Hester, he was a good Puritan man. After he found out, he became evil and wanted revenge. Townspeople said that the "...
