Shakespeare was very financially successful and is remembered as a huge part of the literature and drama of Elizabethan time. Shakespeare's The Tempest utilizes many themes of Elizabethan Renaissance such as humanism, the interest in classical Greece and Rome, and the interest in science/magic.
             First of all, The Tempest displays the elements of Elizabethan Renaissance such as humanism through many of its lead characters. In the fifteenth century the idea of humanism stemmed first from the teachings of the church where they denounce material wealth and believed in goodness in one's spirit to make noble and moral choices no matter how wealthy a person (learner.org). For a character to exhibit humanism he must show compassion and sincere concern for the wellbeing of others. The very first lines of the second scene begin the theme of humanism in this story. Miranda says, "O, I have suffered/ With those that I saw suffer! A brave vessel./ Who had, no doubt, some noble creature in her,/ Dashed all to pieces. O, the cry did knockAgainst my very heart!" (1,2. 1-13). These are a few of Miranda's very first lines of the play and immediately she appears to be a compassionate and concerning person. She displays her concern about the people on the ship. She begins to sincerely cry about people she does not even know. She begs her father to stop the horrible storm if there is any way he can and she also tells him if she could she would do anything in her power to keep the people on that ship from suffering. Miranda's innocent and naive character is a classic case of humanism. She later goes to show her concern for others when dealing with Ferdinand when he has been enslaved by Prospero and is forced to do hard labor.
