Stem Cells

nt. These are the cells that are used to research the stem cells.
While stem cells are extraordinarily important in early human development, multipotent stem cells are also found in children and adults. For example, consider one of the best understood stem cells, the blood stem cell. Blood stem cells reside in the bone marrow of every child and adult, and in fact, they can be found in very small numbers circulating in the blood stream. Blood stem cells perform the critical role of continually replenishing our supply of blood cells – red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets – throughout life. A person cannot survive without blood stem cells.
Researchers are working on numerous procedures that could change the lives of people who are suffering from crippling diseases, cancers, and other non curable illnesses. Recent studies also suggest these cells may hold the secret to treating damaged heart tissue, nerve tissue in the spinal cord, to cures for some of our most baffling diseases, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The debate about this issue is from where these cells are taken.
There are there are several different sources where scientists can get stem cells. They can be extracted from embryonic cells or adult cells. The embryonic cells come from unneeded frozen embryos at fertility clinics, material that would routinely be discarded with the consent of the parents. Another source of the embryonic stem cells is from aborted fetuses. Adult stem cells are taken for the blood and organs of healthy adults.
Most studies done so far with the embryonic stem cells have been on laboratory animals. These results have been astonishing. Researchers have also genetically altered human blood stem cells to activate genes in developing immune cells. The results of the research in mice mean that it is technically possible to transfer genes into stem cells and activate the immune system to fight c...
