(Hochschild A.R. 1983: 7) In the case of the flight attendants, the emotional labour is used as a 'tool of the trade¡ to promote an atmosphere of safety and well being.
             The required emotional detachment the workers feel from themselves is especially important in contemporary society. Hochschild estimates ¡§roughly one third of American workers¡ are employed in positions that require emotional labour. (Hochschild A.R. 1983: 11) However, this estimate is now considerably outdated, and due to the rise in service sector employment the numbers are likely to be much more. This has led Hochschild, and other writers to believe that our emotions are now 'commercialised¡ and sold as a form of labour. In doing this we have arguably detached ourselves so far from our true emotions that we have lost all authenticity in expressing them. This theory relates well to subsequent writers on the subject, particularly Stjepan Mestrovic (1997) whose theory on the ¡§Post-emotional Society¡ has brought the debate into the post-modern arena.
