The Unix code was once taught in college and now it was kept hidden and secure to ensure that no one "steal" it. MINIX was the next species of operating system, which Linux is based upon today. A Dutch college professor named Andrew S Tanenbaum wrote Minix with the idea to show his students the core of a real Operating System. Although it was not the greatest OS, Minix had a big advantage over all the rest, which was that the code was open source.
