The central writing strategy used in the sixth paragraph on page 23 in the novel Waiting by Ha Jin is description. The sentence, "He dreaded its severe winters and the north winds that came from Siberia with clouds of dust," shows this exceptionally well. No other strategies were used.
             Narrative establishes the last paragraph on page 28. The predominant indications of this are the sentences, "Her face was smeared with sweat and tears. As she dove for the ball, she fell flat on the graveled court and scraped her right elbow."
             Description comes into play but only for part of the paragraph; "The spectators applauded the diving save while she slowly picked herself up and found blood oozing from her skin." Paragraph eight is difficult to identify as anything other than a combination of strategies.
             The sixth paragraph on page 35 mostly consists of the use of narration. With the exception of the second to last sentence, "In the presence of his boisterous roommates, she had lost her natural manners," the section is entirely in chronological order. Only some description is contained within and there is very little of any thing else. The time-order is apparent in the first few sentences, "Lin and Manna were working quietly. One by one they placed them on the table, wrapped them up, then returned them to the bookcase." Facts of a story being told make up most the content. No other strategy could be used to write the paragraph other than narration.
             Narration was unmistakably the secondary strategy of choice when Ha Jin wrote the last paragraph on page 133. "Ren's white shirt was wavering on the hill, getting smaller and smaller."
             Overall, the main writing strategy used in the section is analogy. Description also plays a small part. The best sentence to serve as an example of analogy as well as description would have to be: "The still moon hung like a golden sickl...
