They thought that his stories were too sexiest. They found racist and anti-Semitic strains in his books. He had many great writers that influenced his writing. F. Scott Fitzgerald helped gave him critique ideas and asked for his opinion on an occasion or two. Hemingway influenced the younger writers. They looked to his books as great works art.
             The themes in this book various between scenes. This story is about war and everything that has to go with it. This is also a love story between Catherine and Fredrick. Their love blooms in every scene. Like everything else, their love has limits and they must go through obstacles along the way. Innocence is lost through Fredrick be wounded. Fredrick love and lose of Catherine is a disillusionment in itself. Frederick's joining the army because he is there and he can speak the language is disillusionment. Healthy dillusionment is seen in the novel when he abandons his romantic concept of combat and moves on to a healthy disillusionment about war. This led to him concentrating on the war part.
