The characters in Lady Windermere's Fan are Lord Windermere, he is smart and trys to avoid arguments and always helps others. Lady Windermere, she is young and innocent. Lord Augustus just like Algernon, he thinks of marriage as a game but ends up falling in love and getting married. Lord Darlington appears at first to be like Jack, very clever, but as the play or indeed the first scene progresses he becomes more like Algernon, a trivial minded, fun loving man. The Duchess of Berwick is very much like Lady Bracknell, she knows everyone and gossips almost constantly. She exagerates and talks of her husband as though he is an accesory. She is very overpowering of her daughter, Lady Agetha. This is show by Lady Agetha saying nothing through the entire play, except, Yes Mamma. Mrs Erlynne is very talketive and has a devotion to Lady Windermere as she is Lady Windermere's mother, though Lady Windermere doesn't know it, and never finds out. Mrs Erlynne doesn't want Lady Windermere to make the same mistake she did and so is very forceful that Lady Windermere stays with her six month old son. Mrs Erlynne saves Lady Windermere from public disgrace by causing her own.
             At the beginning of the first scene there are comments on how awful it is to give compliments in public. There is a detection of Lady Bracknell spread through all the charactars. Also early in the play it appears that Lady Windimere is something of a feminist. She expresses strongly that women and men should be treated equally. There are several refferences to Marriage as a game.
             Lady Windermere's Fan is quite simmilar to The Importance of Being Ernest it is set in the homes of members of the upperclass of Victorian Society. Both plays contain at a clever, witty character. A a trivially minded character. A Victorian Matron whose husband is spoken of but never heard from. A powerless daughter. An abandoned baby and a strong minded female character.
