Tolstoy creates characteristics of an honest, meek, and obedient character in Alyosha the Pot. Alyosha the Pot was being very obedient as he gained an astounding reward through his life although there were obstacles in the way. Alyosha learned how to tend for himself and by showing respect to his parents and they're malicious abuse. They would scold him but he new to keep quiet and his parents would forget about it. He obeyed when his father took him to work for the merchant who employed Alyosha's brother.
             The merchant and his servants said that Alyosha was a worthless thing. Although the merchant and his servants would say "Why go yourself? Alyosha will run for you" (673). He wouldn't speak against the merchant or the servants because he was soon given tips for his services. He earns his own money and this doesn't go with his wages that his father collects every week
             He soon sees that there are more things to life than being obedient, he learns to love, "... he was needed to clean boots, to run errands or to harness horses; but a relationship that a person has with another who is in no way necessary to him, simply because that other one wants to serve him and to be loving to him" (674). Ustinja was the only one who cared for him and showed him how to love. Ustinja was as hard working as he was, she was shown how to love by her elderly aunt. The merchant soon found out that Alyosha wanted to marry Ustinja, he prevented this by bringing in Alyosha's father to change his mind.
             The merchant told Alyosha's father that he had no use for married servants, that a pregnant cook couldn't do much for him. Alyosha was threatened by his father if he dared to be married, Alyosha obeyed. He didn't murmur against his father and told Ustinja that the wedding was off.
