             Mr. Tang enjoys playing the master for the weekend role. He is visualized as a weekend "gray masculine presence" whom his family extracts money from. He keeps his first family in the city and his second family in the countryside. He is instilling a sense of low self worth in his second family. It shows that his second family is at his mercy or disposal as he is the one who holds on the money purse.
             Mr. Tang's selfish pleasures in the going ons in his second family affects his eldest daughter, Kim Li psychologically until she rebels against her father. Here is the second effect that is the need to rebel against propriety is shown. At the beginning of the story, Kim Mee catches Kim Li in the act of smoking. Kim Li plays the role of a grown-up by smoking her father's cigarette and told her sister off by saying "What do you know of life?" (pg. 170)
             Kim Li has broken the expected code of conduct of a young girl. This itself shows that a form of rebellion is taking place. In addition, Kim Li has the guts to mock her father when she rudely says "Ah Kong, your daughters are becoming women," (pg. 172) during their teatime.
