             A) SOCIETY AND CLASS-CONSCIOUSNESS:
             According to Consuelo Montes, it was the fact that Lawrence's parents belonged to different social classes what made him "class-conscious" and determined his later opinions about the social structure. As we have said, his father was a Midlands miner, and his mother, who had been a school-teacher, came from a bourgeoise family. The cultural difference between them was considerable. John Arthur, Lawrence's father was nearly illiterate and used to speak the dialects of Nottingham and Derbyshire, the same as the other miners. On the other hand, his mother, Lydia Beardsall, had received a good education and was very fond of reading, what made Lawrence have a greater knowledge about Literature than any young man of his age. Lydia used to speak standard English, so Lawrence was able to speak both standard English and dialect (he spoke dialect with his friends but avoided it when he was with his mother).
             The dialect became a way of distinguishing the working classes from the others, and Lawrence included it in his novels as a way of making his characters more real and credible, and also to show the social class they belong to.
             But the most important problem about Lawrence's parents were the different ambitions they had. John Arthur seemed to be fulfilled with his life, working as a miner and drinking beer with his friends, but Lydia felt frustrated and tried to transmit her yearnings, and also her rejection towards the miner community, to her children.
