Current State of Performance Standards

The education system is one of the most important factors in a student's career. It sets a basis to what interests the student to pursue in life and future goals to achieve. Currently, students are forced to achieve performance standards as a requirement to graduate. Theses performance standards are not productive in helping students succeed in achieving the proper education that is needed to decide up on a career.
The requirement of performance standards limits your range of knowledge being tested. Students only learn a fraction of lessons because standards only test on certain areas of chapters. They cover only the portion that someone thought was the only information that would be needed in life, but how would they know what you need to know in life? Many students at school, that actually want to learn, complain that more is learned by self-explanation rather than a teacher explaining it like he or she is paid to do. So there is no help in achieving a better more secure education.
Another reason performance standards are not productive is because if you do not master all criteria listed, then you do not receive credit for that particular course. If no, they must either go to summer school or retake the course in a future year. That would either require money for summer school or dropping a class to retake the failed course. Either way, an extra burden is put upon not only the students, but also the parents to help pay for summer school. Thus making either parents or students to get an extra job.
Most of all, performance standards have too much emphasize on them more than other tests. The more emphasize on the standards bring, more concentration on that particular part of that subject, while other criteria is ignored.
