Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (1830-1886) is one of America's best-known female poets. Her poetry reflects her loneliness and her intimate recollection of inspirational moments. Dickinson's simple writing takes as its subject issues vital to humanity such as the horror of war in "Sleep is supposed to be." She utilizes literary techniques such as iambic meters, slant rhyme, defamiliarization, and the arrangement and breaking of lines to emphasize the message in her writing.
             Examples of these can be appreciated in her poem "Sleep is supposed to be." It is organized so that each stanza expresses a different idea, which leads the reader to the main one. She also arranges lines and adds dashes at the end of some. The sentences are separated into lines with iambic trimeter each. Dickinson also uses slant rhyme in this poem as well as exact rhyme. For instance, "Sleep is supposed to be/ By souls of sanity" is use of slant rhyme and " One with the banner gay--/One in the red array" is of exact rhyme. Furthermore, the employment of defamiliarization throughout the poem is also noticed; by using this, Dickinson makes her subjects unusual and the abstract concrete. These elements emphasize the overall topic of "Sleep is supposed to be."
             When all of these factors come into play, the reader can fully appreciate and interpret Dickinson's poem. The first three stanzas let the reader know that there is an
             abstract, deeper meaning to the familiar "sleep" and "morning." Then the fourth stanza, which is only a line, indicates a break in the flow and the start of the real meaning of these in the event used in the poem. Finally, the fifth and last stanza ties up the whole poem; one discovers that men died in war and are consequently eternally sleeping with no "morning."
