            EQUALITY
            
            
             The word "equalityâ€" has many different meanings. It can mean, for example, the sameness or equivalence of numbers, quantity or different measures. It can also mean equality in size, or likeness in status or quality. One can also discuss the equality of rights, either social or political. These include equal opportunities for all the sexes and races.
            
             The ancient Greeks were the first people to introduce the principle of equality into the political system of City States. This gave birth to the idea of democracy, which meant political power was determined by the vote of everyone, not just the mighty privileged few. In the modern era the American War of Independence gave birth to the notion of equality in the Western world. The American founding fathers devised a written constitution and a Bill of Rights, which gave equal rights to everyone under the rule of law. As time progressed the above rights were extended to woman and to persons who had previously been slaves. Other Western States later adopted the American theory of equality for all citizens under the law.
            
             When talking about the equality of sexes a lot of different thoughts spring to mind.
            
             In the past, men have held most of the senior positions in the workplace and women have been responsible for home-making, rearing of their children, cooking and cleaning. In today's modern world and the influence of the United Nations Organisation women theoretically enjoy the same legal status as men. In practice this is, unfortunately not always the case.
            
             Major religions have always assumed that God is male and that only men can be prophets. They have therefore, made it seem natural that men should rule woman in most respects.
            
             Another example of inequality between the sexes is in the film industry. In most cases male actors are far better paid than female actresses.
