Billy Bishop Goes To War

Billy Bishop goes to war is an excellent play about the way war changes a person. In this play there are many ways in which Billy Bishop changes over the 1st World War. Some notable one's are the way he became more focused on domination and getting to fight and to be number one. War also can turn a nobody into a hero.
The first way that war changes a person is that when they have entered a war they are more determined to fight, because they want to get out there and shoot down as many rival planes as they can! One example of this is the way Billy Bishop looks at war before he had started fighting and then after. Billy Bishop before the war said this: " The hospital is nice. People don't shoot at you and people don't drop thing on you. I thought it would be a nice place to spend the rest of the war." Afterwards when he was told he only had 7 more days to fly until he had to leave the army he could not wait to go out there and shoot down more planes: "Well that still gives me a week. A lot can be done in a week. In the next six days, I shot down five planes. I really was Number One now" As it has been proven, when people enter a war, it can get addictive, they want to be the "winner" and they always want to be up in the sky, above all.
Another way that war changes a person is that Billy Bishop went into that war with an attitude that he could never be a hero, and came out of it as one. He went in saying: " I mean those guys (R.M.C. officers) were nuts! They Were going to make leaders out of us, the theory being that before you could learn to lead, you had to learn how to obey." Bishop did learn how to lead and he earned the approval of Lady St. Helier when she said " You are no longer a rather short Canadian with bad taste and a poor service record.
