Replacing Leadership With Stewardship

             "Trading your Kingdom for a Horse." The previous passage is a line from Shakespeare's, Richard III. When the king is stranded on the battle field he calls out; 'My Kingdom, my kingdom for a horse'. The king realizes that his wealth and power do him no good in his situation. He would gladly give it all up for a practical means of survival, in this case a horse.
             In the late 70's and early 80's businesses realized that they needed to make a change. They needed to find a way to serve their markets more quickly, with higher quality products, and at lower costs. The large corporations were the first to realize that a change was imminent, hospitals were next and schools are now the front runners to make the change. Schools are beginning to be managed by private companies. These companies are planning new beginnings with teachers, parents, and local businesses.
             The changes are an outcome of economic times. Businesses, including government, health care, and schooling are getting smaller, and are having to provide more with less. Companies are failing because they fail in there marketplaces. The way organizations serve customers has to do with purpose, or the use of power and wealth. The system of purpose power and wealth equate to management, or better yet governance. Governance describes the political nature of our lives at home and at work.
             Everyone agrees that when an organization starts to fail a change is needed. "Stewardship is the set of principles and practices which have the potential to make dramatic changes in our governance system." It is designed to create a sense of ownership and responsibility from the bottom of the organization all the way to the top.
