Every society has different values and morals which can either include or segregate a citizen. The way that a specific society can alienate someone is either by race, gender or beliefs. In Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa overcomes the transformation of man into a bug and in this case, it is by physical appearance due to the metamorphosis. With the transmogrifying, Gregor realizes how the society around him, including his family, differs drastically in their morals and values.
             With Gregor being the breadwinner of the Samsa family, he has a lot of responsibilities and obligations in maintaining his family happy and in comfort. With not having to work for anything, the rest of the Samsa family rely on Gregor to provide them with a sense of hard-working, good social status, and an obligation to his work. Before the transformation, Gregor works everyday of his life to support and pay off his family's debts. "Gregor was still here and hadn't the slightest intention of letting the family down" (pg. 11). He hasn't called in sick in 5 years and he does it to keep his family happy. The mother, father, and his sister Grete, does not need to work in order to have what they need because they are lazy and require Gregor to do so, making him feel miserable about this. After Gregor's transformation, the family does not depend on him anymore and they are forced to get their own jobs to support themselves. The family and the household becomes still and quiet, obviously, there are changes occurring.
             Aside from the value of working hard, the Samsa family also appreciated the life of having high social status. With the money being brought in by Gregor, the family needs not to worry about their social status because they already will have one as long as Gregor keeps working.
