             In "Junk" one character, 'Tar', has a low self-esteem as a result of being beaten by his father and emotionally abused by his mother. He uses heroin to get away from reality. "All that crap - about Gemma leaving me, about Mum and Dad, about leaving home. All that negative stuff. All the pain... It just floated away from me." (pg. 129)
             The character 'Tommy' in "Trainspotting" is against using heroin. "It's a waste of your life, Mark, poisoning your body with that shit." After breaking up with his girlfriend, which causes his self-esteem to drop, he decides to try drugs. "Lizzy's gone, Mark, she gone and fucking dumped me. I want to try it Mark."
             Although each characters situation is very different, they are all used well by each author to expose one of the main reasons youths turn to drugs and how surprisingly common it is.
             The second theme is prominent throughout each book as most characters have a close relationship with each other, whether it is platonic or personal.
             You are also often stirred to question how much you can trust people in your own life through different events that occur in the books. A lot of characters change and contradict themselves.
