Dirck van Baburen was a Dutchman originally named Theodore Baburen. He was born in 1590. He was an artist who preferred subjects from every day life. He was very much influenced by Caravaggio, an Italian painter. In 1612, Dirck traveled to Rome. While there, he was commissioned to decorate the chapel in the Church of San Pietro, located in Montorio, Rome. His style has been said to be "broad and forceful", yet is separated from other painters similar to him because of his irregular compositional rhythms, unrefined conception, and lack of atmospheric quality. He died in 1624.
             Christ on the Mount of Olives, by Dirck van Baburen, was painted in 1620. The painting, made of oil on canvas, is 146.8 cm by 316.6 cm. One production of the painting is a digital image, located on the website for the Internet museum of the University of Michigan.
             The foreground of this image includes the three men on the left side, and the plants on the bottom right. The illusions of depth are used well to show that the three men are not on the same plane or spot in the painting, but rather are all in different proximity to the viewer. This is depicted well through means of overlapping. In the background is Jesus with an angel, who is in the sky. The angel is in an apparent opening in the sky, where the light is coming from. This light source is dominating the image in that the attention of the viewer is directed to it because of the high contrast between it and the colors surrounding it. These colors come mainly from, the dark clouds of the sky. Baseline is used in this image as well. Jesus has a higher baseline than the front man, giving the illusion of being further back. There is another apparent light source, due to the amount of light shed on the men in the foreground.
