The Rape of the Lock was an interesting story that displayed greed, envy, and lust. These qualities are portrayed in the story as well as the way they are portrayed now. The roles of men and women have changed tremendously from then to now. Now women have more of a place and a role in society. Men have always been superior and that is also beginning to change. Men are portrayed as greedy, hungry dogs that have nothing better to do than chase women. Women are seen as vain human beings that care more about their looks that what is happening in the world. The roles of men and women were way different then than they are now.
             In this story, the men are portrayed as animals. They have no consideration for real problems of society because they are too busy chasing women. Women are somewhat dumb, to put it bluntly. Women are portrayed as airheads. Nothing is more important to them than their look and their hair. "Here files of pins extend their shining rows, Puffs, powders, patches, Bibles, billet-doux, Now awful Beauty puts on all its arms;." (I, 41-43) This quote expressed exactly how vain the woman is. "Fair tresses man's imperial race ensnare, And beauty draws us with a single hair, Th' adventurous Baron the bright locks admired, He saw, he wished, and to the prize aspread." (II, 7-10) This quote expresses the persistence of the man. He will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants.
             In society, this work does not say much about the role of the men and women. Women are praise to a certain extent. The woman poses qualities that the men do not. Therefore they are treated a little better at times. Men are the protection of the women and re not used for much else. Through the years, the role of the women went from sitting and being royalty to raising children, making clothes, and cleaning. The worth of the women went down and then came up. The men have always had role of the homemaker...
