What made Sonny dive into drugs while his older brother managed to become a
teacher, and start a health family? It's thought that Sonny drifted into drugs, because of
an unsupportive family. His brother wasn't around when he should have been. After
Sonny served jail time for peddling heroin; it was time for his older brother, the narrator
to tie up loose ends. Well Sonny took up another habit, music. How long would it take for
the narrator to re-enter and support his younger brother again?
Many contributing factors led Sonny to that fateful day when he decided to try
heroin. Death of a family, a brother out in the world serving military time unsupportive of
his younger brother of whom he promised to his mother that he would watch out for.
Sonny was always thought of as quiet. As a young man Sonny and his father would often
be found arguing. The narrator blames it on how his father viewed Sonny as "the
apple of his fathers eye". His father "loved Sonny so much and was frightened for him,
that he was always fighting with him" (p.46) But Sonny being the borderline recluse
would just move "back, inside himself, where he can't reached (p.46). But the brother
goes to inform us that "the principal reason what they never hit it off is they were so
much alike (p.46). Dad was big and loud and Sonny was just the opposite but they both
were very private. It's hard to say why the narrator turned out so well. There's always the
idea of the narrator being the older brother and Sonny being younger and more
vulnerable. There are a number of reasons that could be linked to Sonny's dabbling with
