Time Passing and Change

             "The film 'Dead Letter Office' deals with time passing and change"
             From the representation of the mass of letters falling through endless space, to the contrast in character descriptions of Carmen and Lucia, "Dead Letter Office" concentrates on the concept of how time passing can result in change. We are presented with the "lost" characters of Frank and Alice, and are guided through their own self-transformations, as the time that has passed affects the result of their change. Although the path to alteration, for Frank and Alice, is not a typical fairy-tale enlightenment, the support and understanding that each other brought to their relationship made their journey an easier and more fulfilling one.
             As an audience, we are captivated within a specific "film time" of the characters lives, within which we observed the precise moments of change in Frank and Alice's journeys. Even though we were only present for the fraction of Frank and Alice's lives in which their alterations took place, we acquired an understanding of the seemingly everlasting struggle in which Frank and Alice battled to arrive at their final destination. This knowledge was apparent when we were presented with the character of Lucia (Chilean friend of Frank) at the Chilean Social Club. Lucia suggested that Frank write a letter to his wife in Chile and hinted at the consolation in lighting candles for his dead. At this point in Frank's evolution we understand the depth of his past and that he was unable to release the pains of that past and except his present life and future. In contrast to this, Lucia is an extraordinary and simple example of the notion that time passing creates change. Not forgetting the events in the past that shaped her present life, but also not carrying the incredible burden of its emotional torture, Lucia dealt with her grief in a way, which suggested the
